Company overview

Electricity North West owns, operates and maintains the North West’s electricity distribution network. We connect 2.4 million properties and more than 5 million people in the region to the National Grid.

We own one of the original 14 regulated electricity distribution networks in England, Wales and Scotland and are regulated by Ofgem.

Our network covers a diverse range of terrain, from isolated farms in rural areas such as Cumbria, to areas of heavy industry and urban populations including Manchester.

Career development


Our Apprenticeship programme lasts for three years and provides you with a mix of professional training in our custom-built Training Academy, practical experience in the workplace and support to achieve a nationally recognised qualification.

It’s a great programme that provides you with all the skills and knowledge you need to carry out one of the following roles:

Overhead lineworker – you will be responsible for building, maintaining and repairing overhead lines on wood poles (distribution) or steel towers (transmission). To be successful as a lineworker you’ll need a head for heights and to be comfortable working outdoors in all weathers
Cable jointers – you will be primarily responsible for installing and joining together lengths of power cable
Electrical fitters – you will install, repair and maintain electrical plant apparatuses within Electricity North West substations

Trainee engineers

Our Trainee Engineer programme is perfect for broadening your skills. You won’t just train to be a qualified engineer: you will gain an insight into how our wider business works. You’ll be supported every step of the way by a professional mentor and a dedicated training officer, who work with you to help identify and meet your ongoing development needs.

Our programme lasts for 27 months and includes a combination of formal classroom training at our newly built training academy, hands-on work placement experience and sponsorship to achieve an HNC in Electrical Engineering.


Join our graduate programme and you’ll have the chance to train on the job as a professional engineer.

You will be supported every step of the way by a professional mentor. Your mentor will help you get the most out of your 18-month Graduate Engineer Programme. Working with you and your line manager your mentor will help identify and meet your ongoing development needs, fulfilling the standards expected by the IET.
