Career development

Apprentices

Our Foundation Apprenticeship Programme combines experience and training.

You’ll accompany experienced staff to learn your craft on the job, consolidating your skills, knowledge and experience through ‘real time’ working on the network. You’ll also earn industry recognised qualifications.

The first phase of the training will be predominantly residential (Monday to Friday) at one of our training centres. This lasts approximately 12 months.

By the end of the Apprenticeship programme you will have learnt and gained the necessary experience to become a fully qualified craftsperson and achieve a nationally recognised Apprenticeship framework.

The programme takes three years to complete.

Trainee engineers

The Engineering Development Programme (EDP) is a structured training programme designed to give you the skills and experience required to become a qualified field engineer. As such, you’ll need to have completed an ONC or HNC and have some previous work experience, preferably in a relevant sector.

The ultimate aim of the EDP is to take hard-working, enthusiastic, business-focussed individuals and, through a bespoke training programme, enable them to become professional power distribution engineers working on our public and private networks.

After successfully completing your EDP, you’ll have the opportunity to put your new skills to use liaising with customers, Networks Operations and Control, and Network Planning. It’s a role that comes with plenty of responsibility, as you’ll also be supervising field staff and contractors too.

Our Powering Placements are for students looking for a year in industry between their second and third year of university. They last between 10 and 12 months.
