DESCRIPTION
As part of Network Technical Services, the Automation Department is responsible for the Network Controllable Points (NCP) equipment asset-base, the development and integration of new technology solutions for the betterment of system performance and influencing the strategic direction of automation systems on the distribution network. The challenges of RIIO-ED1 and the move towards a low carbon network require innovative solutions to enable the concept of the Smart Grid and NCPs and system automation are key enablers in the migration from the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to the Distribution System Operator (DSO).
The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to develop unique skills on new technologies and system integration associated with: SCADA and equipment protocols, Remote Terminal Units (RTU), Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED), radio communication technology (both private and public clouds), automation logic, data mining, plant actuators and other legacy NCP equipment and architectures. The role will necessitate working with staff from all across the Iberdrola Group.

ACCOUNTABILITIES
* Perform all duties with a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality and environmental matters.
* Perform all duties in support of SP Energy Networks Operational Excellence goals and business drivers.
* Assist with the development of policies and procedures, strategies, standards and specifications in accordance with best practice to ensure effective management of the NCP asset-base consistent with regulatory requirements.
* Project manage the development and integration of new technologies onto the Distribution network and produce, develop and maintain supporting documentation to enable skills transfer to operational staff.
* Identify opportunities for integration of new technologies and systems into legacy NCP equipment to prolong asset-life and maximise past investment.
* Take the lead, or participate in regulatory funded innovation projects (Network Innovation Allowance/Network Innovation Competition/Innovation Rollout Mechanism etc.), or other collaborative projects with internal and/or external stakeholders to identify and develop new technologies that enhance system performance levels with a focus on the challenge of deployment into ‘business-as-usual’.
* Investigate and integrate new communication technologies and control equipment, such as RTUs, fault passage sensors and actuators onto the secondary network across SP Energy Networks.
* Learn new, often converging, disciplines and maintain high-awareness of Group Policy, external governance and other emerging developments that may benefit, or have a negative impact upon SP Energy Networks.
* Produce and deliver training plans to operational field staff on the functional use of legacy and new NCP equipment and automation systems.
* Prepare and deliver presentations on technical subjects to staff from technician, engineering and management grades.
* Participate in knowledge elicitation workshops to promote new technology with a focus on the activities of the Automation Department and the wider Iberdrola Group.
* Manage the total service provision to all SP Energy Networks business units for operational NCP including faults, maintenance and project delivery.
* Carry out detailed investigations of unusual, often complex, fault-modes on the installed NCP equipment-base to identify possible trends and opportunities to minimise disruption of potential avalanche failure and recommend appropriate remedial actions and/or changes to SP Energy Networks policy as necessary.
* Provide 1st-line technical support to field staff on both legacy and new automation technology implemented during RIIO-ED1 and beyond.
* Assist with the development of maintenance plans for the NCP equipment asset-base.
* Represent SP Energy Networks on academic research programmes for the development of new technologies such as Smart Grids and/or Data Mining techniques.
* Management of external contractors.
* Assist with the identification and preparation of annual budgets and manage Capex and Opex spend against project, task and activity budgets, recommending annual work programme and budgetary requirements to Automation Manager as required.
* Mentor graduates, Year-In-Industry students and other staff members to fulfil NTS’ obligations to succession planning.

REQUIREMENTS
* Proven experience and expert knowledge in one or more of the following disciplines:
o Substation and Network Control/SCADA systems
o Telecommunication systems
o Automation
o Protection
o Metering
o Applicants with an excellent knowledge of network operations, and/or is working towards achieving SAP status will be given consideration in lieu of any of the above
* Adept, inquisitive and determined aptitude when interfacing with/configuring new technology.
* Experience of managing a number of projects simultaneously.
* Experienced of producing company documents: technical specifications, guidance documents, method statements.
* Experience in the design of protection and control circuitry at HV distribution level advantageous.
* Working knowledge of SAP not necessary, but advantageous.
* Creative and innovative approach, which enables Energy Networks to take the initiative in industry working groups.
* Good inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other departments/businesses.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA
* An understanding of the regulatory governance that affects the Distribution area of the business.
* Experience in the operation of the Distribution system.
* Literacy in SP Energy Networks computer systems and applications, i.e. PS-Alerts, PowerON, MS-office, plant and equipment-specific interface and configuration tools.

MINIMUM CRITERIA
* Qualified to HNC, or equivalent in an engineering discipline (degree-level preferential).
* Ability to lead technical projects, simultaneously, with little direction.
* Highly effective at expanding personal skills and practices from relationships with manufacturers and other industry experts.
* Strong aptitude with technology and IT (Information Technology).
* Knowledge of Energy Networks health & safety requirements and compliance.
* A broad understanding of the organisation and operation of the business.
