DESCRIPTION

The position of Lead Engineer is based within the Network Planning & Regulation team, helping to ensure that the license obligations of ScottishPower Transmission (SPT) and ScottishPower Distribution (SPD), with respect to network planning and operation, are met.
Carrying out power system studies and analysis to assess various aspects of network and generator performances, e.g. voltage control, fault levels, transient stability and voltage harmonics, as required by license standards and codes, the Lead Engineer will organise and plan own workload to align with delivery dates of various license requirements, e.g. Electricity Ten Year Statement (ETYS) and Long Term Development Statement (LTDS) publication dates, connection offer deadlines and annual objectives.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

* Assess the transmission and distribution systems for compliance with planning and operational standards such as the Security and Quality of Supply Standards (SQSS), by carrying out network studies and evaluating the results.
* Contribute to the maintenance and creation of transmission and distribution network analysis datasets.
* Support the connection application and network planning processes by evaluating project alternatives, identifying and resolving potential technical issues and proposing innovative design solutions.
* Liaise closely with customers about their network connection, particularly with regard to technical aspects, including voltage control and quality of supply issues.
* Become involved in and contribute to technically challenging projects, such as the use of new technologies or the investigation of unusual network disturbances.
* Take part in industry working groups to review standards and codes such as the Security and Quality of Supply Standards (SQSS), the Grid Code or documents produced by the Electricity Networks Association (ENA).
* Provide specialist engineering support across SP Energy Networks.
* Assist in the preparation of industry publications such as the Electricity Ten Year Statement (ETYS) and the Distribution Long Term Development Statement (LTDS).

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

* Experience of power system analysis and design.
* Good communication skills with the ability to write clear reports and present complex technical matters to a non-technical audience.
* Chartered membership of the IET or equivalent, or working towards this.
* Expert knowledge of o Power system analysis, including load flow and fault calculations.

o Electrical characteristics of power system equipment.

* Good working knowledge of o At least one power systems analysis software package.

o Licence security and quality of supply standards.

o Processes and procedures associated with the System Operator (SO) interface.

o Regulatory requirements impacting on SP Energy Networks.

o Connection requirements for on- and offshore transmission systems.

* Awareness of o Commercial issues related to distribution and transmission networks.

o Customers and an ability to meet/exceed customer expectations.

o Financial policies and procedures.

o SP Energy Networks strategic aims and targets.



MINIMUM CRITERIA

* Degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant experience.
* Experience in power system design and analysis, including the use of power system analytical software.
* Working knowledge of GB network design standards and codes (e.g. the SQSS or Grid Code).
* Knowledge of one or more of the following: HVDC, power system harmonics, electromagnetic transient studies, control systems.
