DESCRIPTION

Responsible for leading and managing a team of SCADA project engineers within the Licence Programmes team who support the delivery, commissioning, maintenance and defect repair of primary SCADA & RTU systems on the SP EnergyNetworks’ distribution system.

The position of Senior Engineer (SCADA) will sit within SP EnergyNetworks’ Manweb Distribution Licence Programmes/Technical Support business area and report to the Technical Support Manager.

Availability to travel as required across the SP Manweb licence area is essential within this post. Travel outside the SPM licence area will also be required on occasion.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Managing the delivery of SCADA RTU installation and commissioning associated with 132kV / 33kV and 11kV asset replacement, reinforcement and connections projects in support of the Energy Networks’ Capital Programme - liaising, as required, with ScottishPower’s project delivery teams.
  • Provide front line support on all variants of Distribution and Transmission RTUs and communication hardware within the ScottishPower SCADA systems:
  • Data communications systems used in SCADA systems.
  • Substation Control Systems and plant interfaces.
  • Radio Scanning Telemetry.
  • Knowledge of Distribution SCADA RTUs, communications network infrastructure.
  • Understanding of RTU and plant interface wiring within a substation environment.
  • Data communications systems used in SCADA systems.
  • Monitor and manage RTU faults and alarms from a Control Centre environment using knowledge of system build & infrastructure to provide fault diagnosis.
  • Promote an exemplary safety culture and ensures that all safety legislation is implemented and delivered through all activities.
  • Integrate asset stewardship and ownership values through sound engineering principles and coordinated planning and delivery activities to improve integrity, safety and longevity of the electrical network.
  • To develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours amongst the team through the mentoring and training of less experienced team members, graduates and trainees.
  • Influence and advise the Technical Support Manager on appropriate asset maintenance and replacement strategies through identification of failing assets.  
  • Identify, manage and resolve faults using PC based diagnostic tools for RTUs as well as tools and diagnostics provided on the central system platforms.
  • Manage and participate in an out-of-hours standby rota to give 24/7 support and fault response for all SCADA and Operational Systems.
  • Identify faults, incidents and required system enhancements, ensuring that the system is operated and maintained in a safe, effective and efficient manner and considering developments in technology and best practice.
  • Manage the maintenance of system SCADA components, ensuring integrity and reliability of data as dictated by Power Systems network activities.
  • Support implementation and rollout of new RTU technology and SCADA / Operational System projects into the business.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Awareness and understanding of key business drivers and the external commercial context in which SPEN is operating.
  • Technical and operational experience in a relevant engineering role within a utility environment.
  • Experience of PowerOn and Operational/SCADA Systems in general.
  • Operational Authorisations; plant switching experience / Authorised Person status.
  • DNO safety policies in relation to Transmission / Distribution substation access.
  • Microsoft PC applications including Access, Word, Outlook.
  • Understanding of Windows based diagnostic and configuration software packages in relation to SCADA protocols in use within ScottishPower (e.g. Ferranti Mk3, IEC61850/870 protocol emulation software).
  • Good communication skills and ability to form good working relationships with other departments/business units.
  • Takes responsibility and accountability for tasks and activities and contributes to the achievement of team goals by providing support, advice, encouragement and clear direction and coaching when appropriate.
  • Knowledge of Power Systems Health & Safety requirements and compliance.

MINIMUM CRITERIA 
  • Engineering/Professional qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of distribution protection systems, network automation, system instrumentation and measurement, mobile generation, SCADA, communications and associated plant and apparatus.
  • Computer literacy.
