Engineering Services has full accountability for Engineering Design and Standards, Future Networks, Sustainability and Network Technical Services. The Network Technical Service department is responsible for Strategic Telecommunication network, Secondary Automation and Real Time Systems. The Senior SCADA Engineer role is an integral part of the Real Time Systems team. This team is responsible for ensuring the SCADA systems for both Transmission and Distribution networks are available 24 hours per day, every day of the year.


The Senior SCADA Engineer is a key member of a team of technical experts responsible for the provision of expertise and support across all Energy Networks’ RTS estate including:
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Operating System and Oracle databases
  • Microsoft Server and Desktop Operating Systems
  • RTS Application Software (currently GE PowerOnFusionand e-terra software products)
  • Configuration
  • Data
  • Hardware
  • RTU/Communications Infrastructure

You will support the operational integrity, reliable performance and high service availability of these business critical 24/7 systems.


  • Planning and delivering own work packages as directed.
  • Executing allocated work, recording and reporting progress to the RTS Central Systems Manager.
  • Interfacing with suppliers to RTS
  • Liaison with Energy Networks’ internal ‘customers’.
  • To provide technical expertise in relation to all technical aspects of the installed systems.
  • Providing the necessary technical expertise to ensure timely and successful resolution of RTS system faults that have been escalated from front line support.
  • Support the safety culture, ensuring all legislation and company rules, policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Deliver project and customer service targets.
  • Pro-actively support the enhancement of the RTS estate through organic development.
  • Share technical skills with colleagues.
  • Advise the RTS Central Systems Manager of any escalation issues.
  • Participate as a member of the RTS Internal Standby Rotas as required by the business and dependent upon qualifying skills (for which standby retainer remuneration and car allowance will be provided).
  • Please note that there will be a requirement to travel regularly, particularly within the relevant licence area (primarily in connection with Standby Duties if required), as well as across the UK.
  • Working knowledge of Energy Networks policies, procedures and working practices.
  • Working knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Awareness of network development policies and procedures.
  • Developed customer service skills.
  • Expert knowledge of network and business data and network management systems.
  • Developed communication skills.
  • Ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges.
  • Experience in a relevant technical role.
  • Technical understanding of the Operating Systems, Applications and Hardware that RTS Central Systems supports.
  • SCADA Scan system/database applications and structures, RTU protocols and RTU hardware/software and & communications technology.
  • A minimum of HNC in an IT or Electrical/Electronic Engineering discipline or equivalent relevant experience (preference will be given to candidates with higher academic qualifications e.g. Honours Degree).
  • Understanding of how IT systems operate and interface with each other.
  • Understanding and experience of SCADA.
  • Potential to acquire Operational Authorisations with training.
