Our Generation business ensures we have enough power to continue delivering the energy needed. We deliver competitive energy from across our generation portfolio of hydro and gas-fired generation, while minimising the environmental impact.

The Blackburn Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station was commissioned in 2002. Blackburn CCGT Power Station operates at full load, supplying 60MW of electricity to the national grid. This ScottishPower site operates subject to conditions contained in an Environmental Permit issued and enforced by the Environment Agency. The facility also maintains an Environmental Management System EMS that is accredited to the international standard, ISO 14001.

About the Role

We currently have vacancies for Production Technicians at Blackburn CCGT Power Station. The Production Technician will be responsible for the continuous operation of the power plant to deliver electrical power as directed by ScottishPower Energy Management in a safe and effective manner. This is a lone operator role.

Operate the plant to satisfy environmental and discharge limits and in doing so maximise plant availability and flexibility. Oversee all work activities by following the ScottishPower safety rules; issuing safety documents to achieve safety from the system.

Assist the station management team in achieving continued compliance with statutory obligations and additional accreditations such as ISO14001, 9001, & OHSAS18001.

The Production Technician will be competent to undertake process operations activities including plant start/start and routine operational testing, along with first line fault finding and maintenance activities. They will be responsible for correctly scheduling electrical nominations and operating plant including accurate monitoring and diligence in plant performance. Further to this, identification and reporting of equipment defects and anomalies within the maintenance management system.

In emergency situations the Production Technician will act as Incident Controller until arrival of appropriate authority, thereafter will be a member of the emergency and incident response team dealing with first line response.


* Operate and maintain the plant at the power station in a safe and cost effective manner, and identify plant improvements and modifications
* Contribute to the development of procedures and working practices to ensure the continued safe, efficient and cost effective operation and development of the site
* Implementation of the ScottishPower safety rules to ensure a safe systems of work is maintained
* Respond and to recover the process from unplanned shutdowns whilst ensuring full compliance with the ScottishPower procedures and safe systems of work
* Support the maintenance team in supervision of designated people during plant overhauls, including overseeing activities carried out by contractor staff as appropriate
* Provide support to Management Team & Maintenance department
* Proactive and creative approach to fault diagnosis and problem solving and reporting
* Implementation of operational routines (PM’s) to achieve optimum plant availability
* Plan and organise activities of self and peers for weekly work routines to achieve effective use of available resources
* Report and communicate defects, solutions and conclusions from routine and non-routine activities

About You

If you are suitably experienced in an Operations/Maintenance role involving activities of Large Industry (e.g. Process Plant, CCGT, or Generating Plant), we are keen to speak with you. Ideally you will be educated to a minimum of ONC/HNC level, in a relevant discipline or equivalent vocational qualifications/experience (e.g. a recognised apprenticeship in a relevant discipline). Experience gained in maintenance or operation of similar equipment with respect to steam systems, turbines, pumps, valves, control systems and high voltage distribution would be advantageous.

With your experience in contractor activity supervision/management and the application of a safe system of work (preferably with IOSH 'Managing Safely' qualification), you will have knowledge of relevant legislation e.g. health & safety, environment and employment law. You should also be proficient with IT & Software packages such as Microsoft Office and hold a valid driving licence.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Blackburn (BB2 5HX) with a minimum starting salary from £32400 per annum (plus up to 10% bonus), depending on experience and qualifications, and other company benefits including Stakeholder Pension plan, training and development, generous annual leave and flexible benefits of your choice.
